A popular hotel and spa, which has previously been crowned the UK’s top wedding venue, is hoping to extend its already successful spa service. Ringwood Hall Hotel and Spa, which is Grade II listed, sits in six acres of land in Brimington on the outskirts of Chesterfield.
The application to the local planning authority seeks to create a new spa with two outdoor heated pools inside a disused portion of its garden. Plans for a spa expansion at the award-winning hotel had already been refused in early 2022 due to a lack of information surrounding a number of areas, including a heritage statement.
Now, a year later, the applicant has submitted a detailed application to Chesterfield Borough Council. In the proposal it is outlined that if successful the new extension would create up to 30 new jobs for the local community.

A statement in the application states that market research has shown an increase in the ongoing trend for outdoor spa facilities, predominantly water experiences and outdoor bathing. The current spa, The Garden Secret Spa, at Ringwood Hall would benefit from the addition of the two thermal spa pools, sun loungers and generous seating in the relaxation space allowing the spa to double its daily capacity of customers.
To take advantage of the panoramic views surrounding the spa, the applicant plans to replace an existing dilapidated greenhouse with a new glass structure to enhance the openness of the site. The large walled areas surrounding the site would be repaired with reclaimed materials as well as putting shrubs in to reduce the harshness of the walled area in the water garden.
The award-winning hotel opened its spa in 2018, achieving a ‘5 Bubble’ rating from the Good Spa Guide eight months after opening. By the same awarding body, it achieved runners-up in the ‘Best Newcomer’ category and in 2019 was awarded runner-up in the ‘Best Boutique Spa’.
The applicant hoped that if approved the plans would help put Chesterfield on the map for the benchmark in the luxurious indoor/outdoor spa experience, as well as giving people the opportunity to relax and enjoy the spa experience in a spacious and safe environment.
An initial target decision date has been set for March 16, 2023, but this is likely to be pushed back. The full application can be viewed on the Chesterfield Borough Council planning portal.
