Derbyshire’s Covid hotspot records another surge in infections

Erewash has recorded another surge in Covid-19 infections – and continues to have the highest seven-day rate across the country.

The borough saw 216 new cases in the seven days to May 6 – equivalent to 187.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Weekly infection rates also increased in four other areas – Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire.

Erewash also reported the biggest number of new cases in a single area of Derbyshire in the Government’s latest daily update on Tuesday (May 11).

The borough recorded 18 out of a total of 58 new infections across Derby and Derbyshire in the most recent 24-hour reporting period.

The next highest was Derby with 13.

The total number of cases reported in Derbyshire, indicating the totals for each area (and change in the last 24 hours in brackets):

  • Amber Valley – 8,595 (no change)

  • Bolsover – 5,979 (increase of three)

  • Chesterfield – 6,174 (increase of four)

  • Derby – 20,223 (increase of 13)

  • Derbyshire Dales – 2,996 (increase of one)

  • Erewash – 7,318 (increase of 18)

  • High Peak – 5,038 (increase of nine)

  • North East Derbyshire – 6,069 (increase of four)

  • South Derbyshire – 7,364 (increase of six)

The Government said a further 20 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, bringing the UK total to 127,629.

As of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 2,474 lab-confirmed cases in the UK.

It brings the total to 4,439,691.

No new Covid-19 related hospital deaths have been reported at NHS trusts serving Derbyshire today.

The latest infection rate for each area of Derbyshire expressed as the number of cases per 100,000 of population. Today’s figures, the newest, are for May 6 (change in the last 24 hours in brackets)

  • Amber Valley – 3.9 (no change)
  • Bolsover – 5 (down from 9.9)
  • Chesterfield – 13.3 (up from 12.4)

  • Derby – 17.9 (down from 19)

  • Derbyshire Dales – 8.3 (up from 5.5)
  • Erewash – 187.2 (up from 140.4)

  • High Peak – 24.8 (no change)

  • North East Derbyshire – 18.7 (up from 14.8)

  • South Derbyshire – 16.8 (up from 13.1)

Locally, the number of Covid-related hospital deaths since the start of the pandemic is as follows:
