Driver’s ‘lucky escape’ from A50 crash after medical emergency at the wheel

This is the scene on the A50 where a driver had what emergency services called a ‘lucky escape’.

The road traffic collision took place on the westbound carriageway on Friday (April 16) afternoon, at the junction of the A50 and A518 in Uttoxeter.

According to the emergency responders, the male who had been driving suffered a ‘medical episode’ behind the wheel of this red Volkswagen.

As a result, the vehicle left the road and came to a rest by the grass verge as shown.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told StokeOnTrentLive: “The driver of this vehicle had a lucky escape when his vehicle left the road.

“Please be patient on A50 westbound.

“The island with A518 at Uttoxeter westbound is congested while vehicle is recovered.”

The air ambulance was called to the scene following the incident.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman told StokeOnTrentLive: “We were called at 2:05pm to reports a car had come off the road at the junction of the A50 and A518 in Uttoxeter.

“We sent one ambulance and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Tatenhill to the scene.

“Crews treated one patient, a man, who was believed to have suffered a medical incident at the wheel.

“He was then taken to Royal Derby Hospital for further treatment.”
