First Derbyshire care home workers receive Covid vaccine

Care workers in Derbyshire have become some of the first health professionals to receive the Covid vaccine.

The move comes as part of the Government’s continued roll-out of vaccinations for vulnerable patients and health staff to protect them against the deadly virus.

Carolyn Chittim, a care worker for 37 years, received the vaccine at the Royal Derby Hospital this afternoon.

Ms Chittim supports adults with learning disabilities at the Newhall Day Centre near Swadlincote.

She admitted she was grateful for the opportunity to protect both herself and those she cared for, saying: “I don’t want to get poorly with Covid.

“I’ve had the flu jab this year for the first time, and I want to protect myself. I also don’t want to pass it on to anybody. Can you imagine if you did that?”

Priority has been given to care workers who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of Covid-19.

This includes Caroline Roy, service manager at the Old Vicarage care home in Bolsover, who has had to shield since the start of the pandemic.

She said: “I’ve been working from home for most of the year and I’m just so grateful that because I work for the NHS I have had this opportunity.”

Vulnerable members of other health teams are also being vaccinated as part of the programme, including some workers in Chesterfield Royal’s A&E department.

The chief executive of the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, Gavin Boyle, said he was overjoyed that NHS staff in the region would now be better protected against the virus.

Mr Boyle said the vaccine brought a clear sense of optimism for health workers, but warned it will take time for the immunisation programme to fully take effect.

He added: “Our local care home colleagues are such important partners and we’re delighted to be able to offer them the opportunity of the vaccine to help keep them and their residents safe.

“We’ve seen huge demand for the vaccine since the roll-out last week, with key workers and staff keen to get access as soon as possible.

“In line with national guidance, those working in care homes, those over 80 and vulnerable NHS staff are a priority, and we’ve had really good uptake so far.”
